Blaugruen
blaugrün – a boat that proves: Europe’s forests supply top-quality timber
The blaugrün project had a clear objective: to build a high-quality wooden boat entirely without tropical timber. Constructed from Black Forest larch, durable black locust (resistance class 1) and a little Bulgarian black walnut – three European woods instead of a tropical import.
The biggest challenge was the black locust: its small trunk diameters make it difficult to produce large solid timber components. The solution was a bespoke plywood made from adhesive-bonded veneer layers – a disadvantage was turned into a clever design feature. Black locust was used for the deck, where teak would normally be found.
The result is impressive: the ‘blaugrün’ floats and sails superbly. This was made possible by the exceptional commitment of the Landolt yacht yard (Bermatingen) and numerous partners. That is precisely the message: to encourage other shipyards to build such boats themselves, to share insights and to strengthen a network.
What ‘blaugrün’ developed by hand from black locust veneers, VENDIA offers as a ready-made material: The VENDIA marine plank combines solid wood and marine plywood – made from sliced veneers of native pine, glued with waterproof adhesive. Had a suitable VENDIA plywood been available back then, it would undoubtedly have been the obvious choice. Both embody the same conviction: sustainable boatbuilding using European timber – not a compromise, but the better alternative from our own forests.
